Form W-4 is currently being revised by the IRS. Major revisions, designed to help make accurate withholding easier for employees, are coming soon.

Once the new form is final, you will need to review and understand all changes and communicate those changes to your employees.

Here’s what you need to know so far:

Why do we need a new W-4?

The new design reduces complexity and increases the transparency and accuracy of the withholding system. It will replace complicated worksheets with more forthright questions, simplifying accurate withholding for employees.

Will all employees need to submit a new form?

No. Employees who have submitted Form W-4 before 2020 do not need to submit a new form unless they need to change their withholding.

Are employees hired after 2019 required to use the new form?

Yes. All new employees must use the new W-4, beginning in 2020.

What system changes will I need to make to accommodate the new form?
